There is so much information out there on how to write your CV, what to do, what not to do, and often you might even come across some very contradictory information, leaving you rather confused on what your next step should be.

In our two decades of working in yacht crew recruitment, we have heard it all so here we bring you 5 CV myths we most often hear our candidates being confused by, along with explanations for each of them straight from our expert recruiters.

CV MYTH: "Your CV should be one page long. "

CV FACT: You don't need to limit yourself to just one page. In fact, an ideal CV is 2 pages since you will generally need that much space to properly list your experience, certificates, references, personal info and write a Profile/Objective section.

CV MYTH: "Your CV needs to have coloured blocks to stand out. "

CV FACT: The best CVs are simple and easy to read. Strong colours and graphic elements can be really distracting and take attention away from the most important part – the actual content. Remember that people reading your CV are industry professionals that go through dozens of CVs every day and have to be able to read CVs quickly and efficiently. What's more, captains and recruiters often have to print CVs so having colours on it is not only wasteful but sometimes results in letters not being able to be read.

CV MYTH: "Hobbies and interests don't matter. "

CV FACT: Your hobbies and interest are actually really important because they tell us a lot about you and your personality. This helps us understand who you are and place you on a yacht that would be best suited to you. So be sure to list your hobbies and interests and make sure they are specific to you instead of just putting whatever comes to your mind first.

CV MYTH: "Remove all the work experience you had before joining yachting. "

CV FACT: A lot of yachts are looking for crew with extra skills such as admin, accounting, engineering, mixology or childcare so removing the experiences you had that prove those skills would not be a very good idea. If you were an engineer in the Royal Navy or a chef in a Michelin star restaurant, you certainly wouldn't want to remove that from your CV despite it being land jobs.

CV MYTH: "Don't put your education on you CV because it doesn't matter in yachting. "

CV FACT: Your education actually shows us that you can study at a higher level and stick to something for a long period of time. It also shows us what your interest and aspirations are.
