New to Yachting

Writer's pictureYPI CREW

When you think of a yacht, you might picture a sleek white vessel gliding through the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean with its wealthy owner lounging on deck with a glass of champagne in hand. But while all yachts are certainly luxurious, not all yachts are created equal — some yachts are in fact, superyachts.

If you’re thinking about working as a crew member, you might be wondering what is the difference between a yacht and a superyacht.

What is a yacht?

Simply put, a yacht is a general term for any luxury vessel with onboard sleeping accommodations. This can be anything from a small weekend boat to large motor yachts.

However, within the world of yachting, there is a specific subcategory of vessels known as superyachts. And, while all superyachts are yachts, not all yachts are superyachts.

What Is a Superyacht?

So, what exactly sets a superyacht apart from a regular yacht? A superyacht (sometimes also known as a megayacht) is a term reserved for the crème de la crème of luxury vessels, typically over 24 meters (79 feet) in length and featuring the highest level of craftsmanship, amenities, and service.

Superyachts are built with a higher level of luxury than most yachts, often featuring multiple decks, spacious cabins, and top-of-the-line technology. With many owners also choosing to include features such as private swimming pools, helipads and even mini submarines. Superyachts are also often used for longer voyages and are equipped with the latest navigation and safety technology.

On board superyachts you will find large crew working on a variety of different yacht crew positions. The crew of a superyacht typically consists of a captain, first mate, engineer, stewardess, and deckhand. The crew of a superyacht is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the vessel, as well as the comfort and safety of the guests.

How to find work on a superyacht?
